Heart & Soul - - Cleaving To God

Joshua 22:5
But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.

*Strong's Ex. Conc. No. 1692
Cleave: cling, keep close, hold fast, be joined together
From the Hebrew word 'dabaq' (pronounced daw-bak'). Examples:
Joined Together--Genesis 2:24 (as man to wife).
Cleave To--Ruth 1:14 (as friend to friend)
Hold Fast--Joshua 23:8 (as a people to their God)

JOINED AT THE HEART
Psalm 63:8 "My soul follows hard after Thee: Thy right hand upholds me."
Follows hard after is a phrase which means 'clings tightly to'. Think Gorilla Glue stuck, unable to separate from.

This is the fourth command in this verse.
1. Love The Lord Your God
2. Walk In All His Ways
3. Keep His Commandments
4. Cleave To Him
5. Serve Him With All Our Heart and Soul

When we choose to love God above all else (1), the others will happen automatically in the Spirit. Our hearts need to be right with God, aligned in Him according to His Word. (2) Loving God will cause us to want to walk in His ways. (3) Loving God will instill a desire within us to keep His commandments for we will always want to be found in His favor. (4) Loving God will cause us to cleave to Him, wanting always to be near Him, near enough to hear Him speak softly to us, to hear His voice call us. (5) Loving God will give us a desire to serve Him faithfully and with honor.
Just as in a personal relationship with our spouses or best friends, we will desire only the best for the other. We speak truthfully and honestly with each other. When we speak as friend to friend in our interpersonal relationships, we not only need to speak the truth, but we need to speak it tactfully at times, so as not to hurt feelings: speak in words of love.
WHOLEHEARTED LOVE
Again, in a wedding ceremony where the man declares his love and fidelity to his bride, and she declares her love and fidelity to him, the promise of lifelong commitment is made. A wholehearted commitment to be faithful to each other, to honor the other above all others, to work together in raising their children (seed) in the Love of the Lord. It is a joining together of God plus the husband plus the wife: an intricately woven life, a tapestry of love.
Matthew 18:20 "For where two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them."
Psalm 73:25 "Whom have I in heaven but You? And on earth I desire no one besides You."
Romans 6:17 "But thanks be to God that, though you once were slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were committed."
We, the born again, are God's church. He creates us for Himself. Through the blood of His only begotten Son and the power of His Holy Spirit, He woos us to Himself, drawing us close. And when we respond to His call on our hearts, we offer our whole lives to Him, not wanting to hold anything back. We are His beloved and He is ours.
Sometimes marriages dissolve. Even God divorced His beloved Israel. But for good reason: she left Him first and worshiped other gods. In other words, Israel whored herself out to the service of idolatry. (Jeremiah 3:8). Yet, still God loved Israel and Judah. He called them to repent of their wicked ways and return to Him. (Jeremiah 3:11-20). His people had not cleaved to Him and their relationship was severed; not with a finality, but with a promise of restoration of only she would repent and return to Him.
WORLDLY vs WORDLY
A worldly heart will make worldly decisions and also follow through on those decisions. But a heart that has chosen God needs to make Wordly decisions and follow through, stand strong, in those decisions. Which includes the decision to LOVE GOD and CLEAVE TO HIM ONLY. He wants an exclusive relationship with us.
Have you made the decision to cleave to Him, to be in this exclusive relationship with Him? He's calling your name even now.

Guard Your Heart - - Guard Your Seed

Genesis 18:19
"For I have chosen him so that he will command his children and his house after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just. This is how the LORD will fulfill to Abraham what He promised him.”

*Strong's Ex. Conc. No. 6680
Command: to lay charge (upon), give charge (to), command, order
From the Hebrew word 'tsavah' (pronounced tsaw-vaw').

To command one's children and household is to set in order and make known what is required and what will be accepted according to the Word which God has given us. There is a right way to do this and a wrong way, as many of us are aware.
The right way is to command in the love of the Lord, to lead by example a godly lifestyle in the eyes of the Lord and the eyes of our children and extended family. It is to be obedient to the Word of God in every aspect of our lives, setting our children up for their success and progress in living godly lives.
When we live in the fear of the Lord faithfully, our children, we hope, will also live in the fear of the Lord. But, and if, we have raised them to love God then even if they take the long way to God, we know that they will return to the Lord as long as we keep praying for them to return.
There is a sequence of command in our households. First, we recognize God as Lord. Second, we love the Lord our God with all our hearts, and our minds, and our souls. Thirdly, we honor Him with all that we have and are. Fourthly, we submit to His will for us, for God knows what is best for us, as He is our Heavenly Father, the One who meets the needs of His household, His people.
We recognize God as Lord when we believe that His only begotten Son Jesus Christ the Messiah is Lord of All.
We recognize God as Lord when we believe not only that He Is but that He Is God above all gods and that He is the only God.
We love the Lord our God with all our hearts, when we put Him first in our lives, seeking His will for us, instead of doing whatever we want to do.
We love the Lord our God with all our minds, when we think on His Word, meditate on His Word.
We love the Lord our God with all our souls, when we live for Him: when we live according to His Word: our actions and our words must align with His Word. In love.
We honor God with all that we have when we tithe of our finances and give offerings to build His kingdom.
We honor God with all that we are when we submit to His Word, His Will and His Way willingly and with a joyful heart.
We submit to His will in love, with peace in our hearts and not confusion or doubt; with great expectations of the many blessings He has in store for those who submit to Him.
We are not stingy in giving our time to Him. Time spent not only in study of His Word, but time spent in prayer. This, too, is a part of the command. It is 'communing with God as friend to Friend'. We spend that prayer time with Him not just alone in our special places of prayer, but together as a family, seeking God's face and His presence.
Failure in any aspect of the sequence of the command is to fail on all. Not obeying any part of God's leadership command for our children and our households results in chaos: chaotic lives, chaotic hearts. But when we repent of our failures, our faults, God restores us. And He will restore our children, too. For the promise is not just to us but to our children and our households.
To do what is right and just is to do what is right according to God's Word and live justly before Him in His Way. It's not enough to be a good person. It's not enough to live a peaceful way of life. We must make the decision to do what is right and just that our children and our household may also do what is right and just. Not just living by the example which we have set before them, but living a right and just lifestyle according to the Word which God has laid out before them.
This day and age in which we live is becoming increasingly more difficult in which to maintain a godly lifestyle without having someone come against us for it. Now more than ever, God's people need to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might: we need to be filled with His Word, filled with His Spirit and filled with His Love.
For the day is at hand when the decision to live a God-filled life will cause us to be killed for that decision. Joshua told the Israelites, "Choose you this day whom you will serve. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." (Joshua 24:15).

Intelligent Worship -- Love God -- Part 10

Intelligent Worship brings us into the presence of God through Loving God. Part 10.

 Mark 12:28-30
Now one of the scribes had come up and heard their debate. Noticing how well Jesus had answered them, he asked Him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?”
Jesus replied, “This is the most important: ‘Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment."

Joshua 22:5
But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all His ways, and to keep His commandments, and to cleave (cling, stick like glue) unto Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.

1 John 4:21
If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.

LOVE: agapao (pronounced ag-ap-ah'-o) which means 'to love', 'to prefer'

For us who believe it means we choose to live through Christ, we prefer to live in Him and allow Him to live through us (1 John 4:9-10).
While most of us know John 3:16, few remember to read the next few verses, as well.
John 3:16-18
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

God loves us so much He sent His Son Jesus Christ to pay the penalty once and for all for all sinners everywhere. That's how much God loves us. And He wants us to love Him and each other with this same love: unconditional, no strings attached, all-encompassing love. That kind of love is Agape: divine love. Loving God and Loving each other through the power of God. See? It's not a love that we can accomplish under our own power: it's only available through Christ. It's an Active Love, an Obedient Love.

We love Him because He first loved us. 1 John 4:19.
Be kind and tenderhearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:32

How do we Love God?
By loving each other with His love.
It would be very beneficial to us to read and re-read 1 John 4. And to study it out.

Intelligent Worship -- Worship God -- Part 4

Here we are on Part 4 of our Intelligent Worship Series. You get them in the order I was given them by the Spirit: all of are equal value in our study Intelligent Worship.

DON'T WORSHIP OTHER (manmade) GODS
Exodus 23:24-25
You shall not bow down to worship their gods, nor serve them, nor do [anything] in accordance with their practices. You shall completely overthrow them and break down their [sacred] pillars and images [of pagan worship]. You shall serve [only] the LORD your God, and He shall bless your bread and water. I will also remove sickness from among you.

WORSHIP GOD and none other. We have already read that God's name is Jealous. He desires our worship. When we worship God, we are acknowledging that only He Is God and that all that we have comes from Him, even the air we breathe and how we breathe it.
We can cross reference this passage with Exodus 20:1-6 where God gives the Ten Commandments to Mose
s. While verses one and two are God reminding us Who He Is, verses 3-6 are the First Commandment: Worship God and none other.
  1. And God spoke all these words:
  2. “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
  3. You shall have no other gods before Me.
  4. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in the heavens above, on the earth below, or in the waters beneath.
  5. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on their children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,
  6. but showing loving devotion to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments.
Psalm 29:2 tells us to "Give unto the LORD the glory due unto His name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness." Psalm 113:3 reminds us "From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD'S name is to be praised." Worship of God should be ever in our hearts (gratitude attitude) and on our lips.

You and I like to be praised for what we do. Why are you surprised that God likes to be praised? "The LORD inhabits (dwells, lives in) the praises of His people." (Psalm 22:3 "But You are holy, O You that inhabits the praises of Israel." Other versions use the word "sit" or "enthroned upon". Knowing God is not limited by time or space we know He is not limited to just dwelling on our praises. We can consider our praises to be one of His thrones, for He has a few.

WORSHIP GOD ONLY

Matthew 4:10
Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve.’”

 Deuteronomy 6:13
Fear the LORD your God, serve Him only, and take your oaths in His name.

1 Samuel 7:3
Then Samuel said to all the house of Israel, "If you are returning to the LORD with all your hearts, then rid yourselves of the foreign gods and Ashtoreths among you, prepare your hearts for the LORD, and serve Him only. And He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines."

Isaiah 30:22
So you will desecrate your silver-plated idols and your gold-plated images. You will throw them away like menstrual cloths, saying to them, "Be gone!"

Joshua 24:14
Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve Him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve the LORD.

Pretty plain and vivid speaking here, wouldn't you say? If we put anything or anyone else first in our lives instead of God, His wrath and His judgments will fall on us, too. Other gods are not always idols, sometimes it's ideologies (doctrine, myth, belief that guides a person or the society in which they live) or cultures (civilization, education) or traditions (that's the way we've always done it mentality).

When we put what we want ahead of what God wants for us, then we are making ourselves gods and serving our needs and desires instead of His. That's not right. We can justify our argument all we want but we're still wrong in our decision process.

1 Samuel 12:14-15
If you will fear the LORD and serve Him and obey His voice and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, and if both you and the king (governmental authority) who reigns over you will follow the LORD your God, it will be well.
But if you will not obey the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then the hand of the LORD will be against you and your king.

Nobody speaks plainer than God. As Joshua wrote, "And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:15)

As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

When I .....

I don't live my life according to the stars. Nor do I seek what the future holds. (Leviticus 19:31; Leviticus 20:6; Isaiah 8:19)

God is my life-giver, life-sustainer, new life in Christ through God's grace God. (Acts 17:28; Job 12:10; Psalm 36:9)

It is to God I go for direction. Whether we take the high road up in the mountains and hills, or whether we take the low road down in the valleys and waysides. I will follow Jesus Christ, Son of The Living God.

When I have questions, I go to God. And He answers me.(Matthew 7:7)

When I have fears, I trust in God. And He comforts me.
(Isaiah 41:10)

When I have doubts, I lean on God. And He upholds me with His right hand. (Psalm 18:35; Psalm 63:8)

When I am discouraged, He lifts me up.
(Joshua 10:25; Ephesians 6:10)

When I am oppressed, I turn to Him for strength. And He fights for me. (Psalm 42:9-11; Psalm 18:2; Psalm 14:6)

When my soul agonizes in prayer, He meets me where I am.
(Psalm 88:9; Job 11:13-19; Psalm 24:6)

When my heart is overwhelmed, He covers me with His wings.
(Psalm 91:3-5)
When I need God, and I ALWAYS need GOD, He is near: just a whisper away. (1 Kings 19:12)
When I cry out, He hears my voice. (Psalm 28:2; 62:8)

When I am silent before Him, God speaks. And I listen.
(Psalm 46:10; Habakkuk 2:20; Isaiah 41:1)
